TOOLS: Samson Zoom H2

It took some time to get back to my tools’ list, so here’s a long time companion, a sound recorder.

Back in the days when I was doing radio work, I really loved the Minidisc recorders with the given standard Sony surround mics. I always loved dictaphones, so I couldn’t wait for this unit, had to import it from the US, as European customers won’t get served until the US market is saturated.

Records 96 kHz, 24 bit to an SD card with 4 mics, 2 in the front, 2 in the back, so it’s way too much for recording conversations – its broadcast quality qualifies for radio and video use also. It has a built-in compressor to avoid digital clipping plus a jack in to record from a mixing desk. If you connect it to your computer via USB, voila, you have a heavy duty digital microphone.

For 200 bucks its a must to have if you deal with sound recording.
